Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Allen-Bradley 2080-RTD2?
It is a Rockwell Automation Micro800 plug-in RTD input module featuring two non-isolated temperature measurement channels and 14-bit resolution for supported resistance temperature detectors.
How many RTD input channels are available?
The module provides two input channels, Channel 0 and Channel 1. Each channel can be configured for a supported RTD sensor type and data update rate.
Which RTD sensor types does the module support?
The manufacturer lists 11 configurations: platinum 100, 200, 500 and 1000 Ω sensors with 385 or 392 coefficients, 10 Ω Copper 427, 120 Ω Nickel 672 and 604 Ω Nickel-Iron 518.
Does the 2080-RTD2 support Pt100 and Pt1000 sensors?
Yes. Pt100 and Pt1000 configurations are supported for both the listed platinum 385 and platinum 392 coefficient options. The appropriate coefficient must be selected for the connected sensor.
What is the default RTD sensor configuration?
The default RTD type is 100 Ω Platinum 385, commonly identified as Pt100 with the corresponding temperature coefficient.
What is the measurement resolution?
The module provides 14-bit analog-to-digital measurement resolution. Temperature precision and accuracy are also affected by sensor characteristics, wiring and measurement configuration.
What is the specified temperature measurement accuracy?
Rockwell Automation specifies ±1.0°C at 25°C under defined conditions. The complete measurement-system accuracy also depends on RTD sensor tolerance, lead resistance and the selected measurement settings.
Does the module support 2-wire and 3-wire RTD sensors?
Yes. The module supports both 2-wire and 3-wire configurations and also documents supported 4-wire arrangements. Follow the manufacturer's channel-specific wiring diagram when selecting the appropriate connection method.
Are the two RTD channels electrically isolated?
No. Rockwell Automation identifies the 2080-RTD2 as a non-isolated module. Appropriate shielding, grounding and sensor wiring practices are important in electrically noisy environments.
Does the 2080-RTD2 require cold junction compensation?
No. Cold junction compensation is a thermocouple measurement requirement. RTD temperature measurement uses sensor resistance and does not require the external thermocouple cold junction sensor.
Does the module provide open-circuit detection?
Yes. Open-circuit, short-circuit, overrange and underrange diagnostic functions are documented. The open-circuit detection time is specified as 8 to 1212 ms.
How is the RTD data update rate configured?
The supported configuration software provides selectable channel update rates from 4.17 to 470 Hz. The default setting is 16.7 Hz, and measurement performance can vary with the selected rate.
Which Micro800 controllers can use the module?
The 2080-RTD2 is a plug-in module for supported Micro800 controllers with compatible plug-in slots, including applicable Micro820, Micro830, Micro850 and Micro870 systems. Confirm the exact controller hardware and software compatibility before installation.
Does the module require an external 24 VDC supply?
It receives operating power through the controller plug-in interface. Rockwell Automation specifies 40 mA consumption at 3.3 VDC.
What is the difference between 2080-RTD2 and 2080-TC2?
The 2080-RTD2 measures supported resistance temperature detectors such as Pt100 and Pt1000. The 2080-TC2 measures supported thermocouple types including J, K, N, T, E, R, S and B. They are designed for different sensor technologies.
Can the 2080-RTD2 be removed while the PLC is powered?
No. Removal and insertion under power are not supported. Disconnect the appropriate power sources before installing or removing the plug-in module.
What should be checked before ordering?
Confirm the exact catalog number 2080-RTD2, two non-isolated RTD inputs, required sensor resistance and coefficient, 14-bit resolution, compatible Micro800 controller and plug-in slot, 2-wire or compensated sensor wiring arrangement, controller power budget, software configuration requirements and proper shielding. Verify the applicable Rockwell Automation manual for installation and commissioning.
