Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Allen-Bradley 20-COMM-ER?
It is a Rockwell Automation dual-port EtherNet/IP communication adapter used to connect supported PowerFlex 7-Class drives and SMC motor controllers to industrial Ethernet networks.
How many Ethernet ports does the module have?
The 20-COMM-ER has two Ethernet ports and supports 10 Mbps and 100 Mbps operation in half-duplex or full-duplex modes.
Does the 20-COMM-ER support Device Level Ring networks?
Yes. The module supports Device Level Ring topology as well as compatible star networks. Ring fault tolerance depends on the overall network design and properly configured DLR components.
Which PowerFlex drives are compatible?
Rockwell Automation documents compatibility with PowerFlex 70, 70EC, 700, 700VC, 700H, 700S, 700L, 7000 and 7000-2 drive families, together with selected PowerFlex Digital DC products. Verify the exact host model and firmware before installation.
Is the 20-COMM-ER compatible with PowerFlex 753 or 755 drives?
No. The Rockwell Automation 20-COMM-ER user manual explicitly states that the adapter is not compatible with PowerFlex 750-Series drives. PowerFlex 753 and 755 systems require their own supported network communication arrangements.
Can the adapter be used with SMC Flex or SMC-50?
Yes. Both SMC Flex and SMC-50 smart motor controllers are included in the manufacturer's compatible-product list. Verify the exact controller configuration and firmware requirements.
What is the difference between 20-COMM-ER and 20-COMM-E?
The 20-COMM-ER provides dual Ethernet ports with Device Level Ring support. The 20-COMM-E is a different, single-port EtherNet/IP adapter with different installation and compatibility capabilities. They should not be assumed interchangeable.
Does the 20-COMM-ER require an external power supply?
No separate network-side power supply is required for standard installation. It receives 5 VDC power from the compatible host through the DPI interface. The user manual lists 482 mA consumption at 5 VDC.
What is the DPI communication speed?
The adapter communicates with its host through the Drive Peripheral Interface at 125 kbps or 500 kbps, depending on the supported host configuration.
Does the adapter support implicit and explicit messaging?
Yes. The 20-COMM-ER supports implicit I/O messaging for configured data exchange and explicit messaging for supported parameter and diagnostic operations. It also supports up to four pairs of Datalinks.
How is the IP address configured?
Network addressing can be configured through BOOTP/DHCP, adapter parameters or supported address switches. Proper subnet mask and gateway settings are needed where required by the industrial network design.
Does the 20-COMM-ER have built-in diagnostic functions?
Yes. Four status indicators display communication conditions. The embedded web interface can also provide device information, network statistics and diagnostics when web access has been enabled.
Can the module send email fault notifications?
Yes. The adapter supports configurable email notifications for selected drive faults, cleared faults and communication or idle events. A suitable SMTP server and network configuration are required.
What are the module dimensions?
The manufacturer's user manual lists 19 mm height, 86 mm length and 78.5 mm width, with a shipping weight of approximately 150 g.
What is the operating temperature range?
The specified operating range is -10 to +50°C. The relative humidity range is 5% to 95%, noncondensing, and the module must be protected from corrosive or volatile atmospheres.
Is the Allen-Bradley 20-COMM-ER discontinued?
Rockwell Automation identifies the 20-COMM-ER as Active Mature in its product catalog. This is a lifecycle designation and should be checked again when planning long-term equipment maintenance.
What should be checked before ordering?
Confirm the complete catalog number 20-COMM-ER, dual-port 10/100 Mbps EtherNet/IP requirement, DLR topology, compatible PowerFlex or SMC host, DPI interface and firmware, intended controller, network configuration, mounting arrangement and the distinction from 20-COMM-E. Do not select this module for a PowerFlex 750-Series drive.
